The Pacheco family’s Arizona roots go back 10 generations and since spending his summers pulling weeds and driving the tractor to the field and spraying weeds – “we broke a lot of stuff,” Jeremy admits – Jeremy has traded his weeding gloves for a white, crisp chef’s jacket embroidered with the title “Executive Chef.”
Having worked for several renowned establishments throughout the Valley, including the Phoenician and LON’s at the Hermosa Inn… Jeremy is now the executive chef and culinary director for Genuine Concepts.

With summer just around the corner, so too are the days when only an ice cold margarita will do. But that doesn’t mean you have to go for a simple mix of tequila, lime juice and sugar. When you’re craving more than the basics, hit these Valley restaurants and bars. They take the classic margarita up a notch – or several.

The north-central Phoenix neighborhood of Sunnyslope isn’t the restaurant hot spot that Central Phoenix and Arcadia have become, but that didn’t stop the guys at Genuine Concepts – best known for The Vig empire – from realizing the area could use a little fiesta firepower. Enter Ladera, a lovely little cantina-style restaurant with a charming bar and lush, shaded patio.

With the Mezcolada, Ladera Taverna y Cocina, the latest offering from The Vig owner Tucker Woodbury, expertly combines smoky El Silencio Mezcal with freshly squeezed lime and pineapple juices, coconut and – wait for it – taps it directly from a fancy new slushy machine that whirs silently in the corner of the bar.

Ladera Taverna y Cocina is the latest project from Genuine Concepts, which is better known for hip neighborhood outposts like The Vig than for its traditional Mexican restaurants. For its first Mexican concept, the group has tapped chef Jorge Gomez, who has devised an accessible menu of refined, regional Mexican cooking. Highlights include the cochinita pibil tacos and the savory green chile, both of which benefit from expert slow-cooking. The drink menu, featuring fun and novel diversions like a house margarita paired with a frozen paleta, is reason enough to visit.

What is it about the return of football season that has us thinking all things dip — from creamy and dreamy to cheesy and gooey — and where to get our fix? Located in North Central Phoenix on Central Avenue just south of Dunlap Avenue. Walking up to Ladera you will immediately notice the beautiful entryway. Then upon entering Ladera, you are greeted with an open air patio as well as a lovely intimate dining room and bar area. You can tell that a lot thought was put into the details of the restaurant’s design. Once you are seated and start to peruse the menu. You will notice that just as much thought was put into both the drink and food menu items. Also, the Churros alone would put them on any best new restaurants in Phoenix list!

For its first foray into Mexican food, the group has tapped executive chef Jorge Gomez, who riffs on regional Mexican cooking with considerable panache.

Meet Colton James Brock, bartender at Ladera Taverna y Cocina
Colton James Brock speaking. I am a third-generation Arizonan and first-generation painter, photographer, and bartender at Ladera Taverna y Cocina. In my 15-plus years behind the bar, I’ve learned that mixing pigments on a palette is no different than balancing flavors in a glass.

It’s impossible to ignore the very recent explosion of agave spirit-focused, cantina-like restaurants and bars across the Valley. Behind Revolu, which opened in Peoria back in October 2016, Ladera, from Genuine Concepts (you know them for The Vig, Cobra Arcade Bar, and Linger Longer Lounge), was the second of this new crop, opening just shy of six months ago in the Sunnyslope neighborhood of north Phoenix.

While dining is a journey for all the senses, we actually eat with our eyes long before we touch, smell or taste a dish. And what’s more appetizing than pops of color, especially during spring? This month, we sought out some of Phoenix’s most vivid menu items to wet your visual appetite. But please, don’t eat the page!

Ladera Taverna y Cocina opened in Sunnyslope in December. The authentic Mexican menu strays from the usual tacos and quesadillas, focusing on creative, colorful dishes like crispy red snapper and chiles rellenos. Throughout the restaurant, touches such as talavera tiles, rustic chandeliers, and a fireplace create a mission-style hacienda feel.

For this week’s video review, we made our way to North Central Phoenix to check out a brand new spot named Ladera Taverna y Cocina. Located on Central Avenue just south of Dunlap Avenue. Yes, we know that Ladera is outside of Scottsdale. But we travel well and we travel even better for great food. We hope that you will too and follow along with us in Scottsdale and throughout the Valley…
